Cesar Gracie, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing his belief that the Renzo Gracie camp should not have helped prepare Georges St. Pierre to fight Jake Shields (a Cesar Gracie student):
“Renzo’s like a brother to me. You have to understand, we grew up together. Nothing’s going to change. People try to make a big thing about it, but I did have a talk with Renzo and I said, ‘Renzo, you’re training a guy that doesn’t represent your academy, that represents another academy, to fight a guy that represents a Gracie academy. It doesn’t make sense to me. It just doesn’t.’ Georges is a great guy. Georges St. Pierre, from all accounts, is respectful. He’s a decent human being is my understanding. … I did have that discussion with Renzo. I don’t know if anything came about from it, but that was pretty much it. I’m an old-school guy. … I don’t know exactly what they’re doing over there with that. It’s just not my way. I’m old school and I’m going to die old school. That’s who I am. I made my feelings known to Renzo about it. I don’t think my guys appreciate it.”
