WBC Approves Elimination Tournament to Decide Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Next Title Fights

In a move to determine Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s next mandatory challengers at welterweight and junior middleweight, on Wednesday the World Boxing Council approved a tournament style eliminator in both weight classes.

The governing body acknowledges the decision was made to help in finally putting together Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. The vote was held during the Mandatory Defences Committee meeting, at the WBC’s 52nd convention at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

The newly instituted tournaments would consist of the top eight fighters in each division competing against each other until one is left unbeaten. The winners would then in turn earn a shot against “Money.” It’s worth noting the fights would not take place over the course of one night similar to mixed martial arts or kickboxing, but would gradually happen in about a year’s time.

Of course this hinges on the outcome of the two fights remaining on Mayweather’s current Showtime contract and whether he decides to retire as he has alluded to in the past. The plan is for the tournament to serve as a building up process for those involved, adding legitimacy to their shot at the undefeated champion.
