Middleweights

Robert McDaniel (20-6, 0-0 UFC) vs. Gilbert Smith (5-1, 0-0 UFC)

The Matchup: The most experienced member of the latest “Ultimate Fighter” cast, McDaniel suffered defeats to both of the show’s finalists, Uriah Hall and Kelvin Gastelum. The Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts representative was also one of the most outspoken and visible competitors on the program, which probably explains the placement of this bout on the main card.

McDaniel appears to have a favorable matchup in Smith, a 5-foot-9 wrestler who had some cardio issues in a second-round knockout loss to Luke Barnatt. While Smith’s thickly muscled frame is imposing, it is not necessarily ideal for MMA, especially when he cannot consistently hold position after landing takedowns, which he struggled to do against Barnatt.

A limited standup repertoire means Smith will have to test his gas tank by remaining persistent in his pursuit of the takedown against McDaniel. However, “Bubba” is an accomplished grappler with 15 victories by way of submission, and he has a solid array of transitions, sweeps and escapes on the floor. He does tend to surrender dominant positions too easily at times, but Smith, especially if he tires quickly, might not be able to identify and capitalize on those opportunities. McDaniel might also be able to catch Smith with a well-timed knee or kick as he shoots, as the Colorado native can be careless when he dives in for takedowns.

McDaniel is far more experienced against tougher opposition, with wins over the likes of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 11 alumnus Kyacey Uscola and Bellator MMA competitor Eric Schambari, as well as losses to UFC veteran Gerald Harris and current Bellator middleweight ruler Alexander Shlemenko on his resume. Smith’s most notable bout -- a defeat at the hands of Justin Guthrie in 2011 -- is encouraging because the Team Victory product was able to go a full five rounds in the loss.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, McDaniel’s teammate at Jackson’s MMA, expressed concerns about McDaniel’s consistency on the show, basically saying he can be great in practice one day and underwhelming the next. Meanwhile, Smith broke down in tears prior to his loss to Barnatt, which did not endear him to everyone in the “Ultimate Fighter” house at the time. The proper mindset could go a long way in determining a winner in this matchup.

The Pick: Smith might be able to score his share of takedowns, but expect McDaniel to escape to his feet or reverse into more favorable positions. As the bout progresses, McDaniel becomes more dominant as Smith tires, winning via decision or late stoppage.
