Masvidal in a welterweight contest in the main event of
UFC Fight Night 147 on Saturday.
Despite a failed attempt at winning the title at UFC 228 last September, Till (17-1-1) is still one the top contenders at 170 pounds. With Tyron Woodley no longer champion, he could stake a claim at another title shot sooner than expected. Although ranked as the ninth-best welterweight in the world by Sherdog, the Liverpool native is ranked fifth by ESPN and is also the No. 3 contender according to the UFC rankings. His high ranking is one of the reasons why this fight was a “no-brainer” for Masvidal (32-13), who has been inactive for a while.
“Gamebred” has not competed since dropping a unanimous defeat to
Stephen
Thompson in late 2017 and has fallen in the rankings as a
result. He’s no longer ranked by Sherdog or ESPN but is No. 11 in
the UFC rankings. A win on Saturday could see Masvidal move up the
rankings and go right back into title contention.
Meanwhile, more ranked welterweights are in action in the co-main event as Leon Edwards takes on Gunnar Nelson. Edwards (16-3) has won his last six in a row and will be hoping to get a shot at the winner of the main event, should he emerge victorious against Nelson (17-3-1). “Rocky” is unranked by Sherdog and ESPN but is currently ranked No. 10 in the UFC rankings. The same applies to “Gunni” who is ranked No. 13 in the UFC rankings and will look to climb up further with a second consecutive win following his 2017 knockout loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio.
Lastly, a pivotal light heavyweight clash is also on the main card as Volkan Oezdemir is up against the undefeated Dominick Reyes. After a meteoric rise in 2017 that led to a title shot, Oezdemir (15-3) is now on a two-fight losing streak and will look to get back in the win column on Saturday. The Swiss native is still rated as the seventh-best 205-lb fighter in the world by Sherdog, the 10th-best according to ESPN, and is the No. 6 contender in the UFC rankings. A decisive win for “No Time” could potentially see him get a title-eliminator bout at the least.
His opponent in Reyes (10-0) on the other hand, will look to continue his own rise and possibly get the next title shot at Jon Jones. “The Devastator” is currently ranked as the 10th-best light heavyweight in the world and is the No. 8 contender in the UFC rankings.
