Two “masters” grappling matches have been added to the 2011 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships, as the organization announced Thursday that Eddie Bravo will rematch Royler Gracie, while Renzo Gracie squares off with Mario Sperry.
An additional “super-fight” pitting reigning Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza against 2009 ADCC absolute champ Braulio Estima was also confirmed for the event, which takes place Sept. 24-25 in Nottingham, England.
In addition to sporting impressive MMA records, both Renzo Gracie and Sperry are former ADCC champions in their respective weight categories. Renzo’s cousin, Royler is a three-time champion in the competition’s lightest class, winning titles at 145-pounds and under in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Royler was upset at ADCC 2003 when Bravo -- then only a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt -- used a triangle choke to submit him.
Started in 1998, ADCC is the world’s most prestigious grappling competition. The world championships take place every two years and tournaments are held in five weight categories for the male competitors. Additionally, an open-weight “absolute” tournament is held, pitting top competitors from each weight class against one another to decide the competition’s supreme grappler.
