Ricardo Mayorga’s MMA Victory Changed to No Contest by Nicaraguan Commission

Ricardo Mayorga’s strange foray into mixed martial arts has taken another turn, as the Nicaraguan MMA commission recently changed his May 3 triumph over Wesley Tiffer to a no-contest. Boxingscene.com initially reported the ruling on Monday.

Mayorga weighed in at 175.9 pounds for what was supposed to be a lightweight bout at Omega MMA “Battle of the Americas” at Pharaohs Casino in Managua, Nicaragua. Despite the weight discrepancy -- Tiffer tipped the scales at 153 pounds -- the headlining conflict took place as scheduled.

Tiffer took Mayorga down repeatedly during the fight’s 10-minute duration, but it was the former professional boxer who struck the decisive blow late in the second round, landing what appeared to be a knee to the spine to free himself from an armbar attempt.

Referee Milton Rosales did not call a foul at the time of the strike, and Tiffer was deemed unfit to continue by a cageside physician at the end of the second frame. This past weekend, Nicaraguan commission chairman Zack Asagary announced at a press conference that the verdict has been changed to a no-contest. Additionally, Mayorga will be suspended for three months.

Mayorga, 39, is a former 147- and 154-pound world champion in boxing, but he has not competed inside the squared circle since losing to Miguel Cotto on March 3, 2011. Mayorga was initially expected to make his MMA debut in May 2010 against Din Thomas at Shine Fights “World Collide.” However, the North Carolina Boxing Authority canceled the show shortly before the event took place.
