Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

Land of the Rising Star

Tatsuro Taira continues to build his résumé in the Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight division.

Though the circumstances weren’t ideal, Taira deserves at least a portion of the credit for the knee injury that ended opponent Alex Perez’s evening in the second round of the UFC on ESPN 58 headliner on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Taira has now won five straight contests at 125 pounds, and his latest triumph over a former title challenger allows for his debut in Sherdog’s divisional rankings at No. 11. Taira remains a talent to watch in the months to come, though his post-fight callout of Alexandre Pantoja may still be a little too ambitious at this point in time.

Elsewhere, after being down two rounds on the scorecards, Liz Carmouche snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with an armbar submission against Kana Watanabe 4:52 into Round 3 of their PFL 4 encounter on Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. It may have been a little too close for comfort, but by extending her winning streak to nine, Carmouche keeps her PFL championship hopes alive while also holding on to her No. 4 ranking at 125 pounds.

Former UFC title challenger Taila Santos also advanced to the PFL postseason by earning a three-round verdict over the previously undefeated Jena Bishop. The Brazilian has been victorious in her first two PFL appearances after exiting the UFC on the heels of back-to-back defeats. Santos is currently No. 9 in the flyweight poll.
