Preview: PFL 8 2024 | Light Heavyweight, Lightweight Playoffs

Walsh vs. Stapleton

Lightweights

Biaggio Ali Walsh (1-0, 1-0 PFL) vs. Brian Stapleton (0-0, 0-0 PFL)

The grandson of arguably the greatest boxer of all-time kicks off the main card as Walsh welcomes Stapelton to the SmartCage. The PFL has done a careful job of building up Walsh as the brand’s future. It’s very rare to see an amateur fighter highlighted on a major promotion, but that’s precisely what the PFL did when it showcased five of his amateur bouts between 2022-23. Many wondered when the grandson of Muhammad Ali would finally turn pro, and those questions were answered in February. Walsh shined in his debut, earning a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Palacio. The 25-year-old returns to action here, with a clear plan for his development that is evident in his choice of opponent. Stapelton is a local guy from Gulf Breeze, Florida, who is making his pro debut on one of the biggest stages in MMA after an up-and-down amateur career. Stapleton doesn’t usually go to the scorecards and fights with a finish-or-be-finished mentality. Walsh should remember that he has recorded three TKOs in the amateur ranks and would love to stun the favorite with his power. With all the stock the PFL has put into Walsh, it’s hard to see him losing this early in his pro career. Having a 1-0 fighter open a primetime main card against a pro debutant is a clear sign that the PFL expects Walsh to put on a highlight-reel finish. Expect this one to end early.
