Sherdog Boxing: The Weekly Wrap

Mayweather to Fight Tenshin Nasukawa in Three-Round Boxing Exhibition

After some turmoil, Floyd Mayweather announced that he would be fighting Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in a three-round exhibition match under boxing rules. In the video from TMZ, Floyd said that he has already made seven figures promoting the fight despite the fact that he was unsure if the Japanese promotion was pronounced risen or risin’ and that it will be the highest-earning exhibition fight of all time. But in case you are concerned the bout will be entertaining or that this “exhibition” will be anything like Creed-Drago, Floyd tempered any possible excitement for the fight by saying it would be nine minutes of him and his opponent moving around a bit.

Floyd was also seen on Sunday at the LA Rams-Seattle Seahawks game, where he was given a football by Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett after scoring a touchdown. He was later given a second football after LA Rams receiver Brandin Cooks scored a touchdown. Unfortunately for Lockett, when the Seattle Seahawks’ Twitter posted a photo of Floyd receiving the ball, fans harassed the account until they took the tweet down, citing both a child in the background who seemed incredibly disappointed he didn’t get the ball and Floyd’s history of domestic violence. If the young man really wants to know disappointment, he should tune into Floyd’s Rizin FF debut against Tenshin Nasukawa.

Mikey Garcia to Fight Errol Spence Jr. on Mar. 16

After months of speculation, this week Mikey Garcia and Errol Spence Jr. made their fight official. They will be facing each other on Mar. 16 on the newly established “Fox PPV” live from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. While Fox wanted you to get excited for that fight, having the two fighters face off evoked a far different reaction from the majority of boxing fans on Twitter. Boxing Twitter was quick to notice just how much bigger Spence was than Garcia, which not especially surprising considering Spence fights at 147 and Garcia has been fighting at 135 but was made abundantly clear when the two fighters stood in front of each other. Opinions on this fight have been all over the place, ranging from Kevin Iole’s declaration that “every boxer should strive to be more like the fearless Mikey Garcia” to an extreme disappointment Garcia was unwilling to fight Lomachenko. Still, the image was jarring, the Photoshops were funny, and the hype Fox meant to establish went out the window as fans applauded Garcia’s bravery but deemed the fight a mismatch.

Other fights that were announced as part of the deal between PBC and Fox included Keith Thurman fighting Josesito Lopez, Leo Santa Cruz vs. Miguel Flores, Danny Garcia vs. Adrian Granados, Jermall Charlo vs. Willie Monroe Jr. and Jermell Charlo vs. Tony Harrison. At the press conference, Fox also announced their broadcast team would include, Ray Mancini, Chris Myers, Tyson press conference bite victim Lennox Lewis and famous biter Marv Albert’s son Kenny Albert.

Canelo-Fielding Adds Marquee Names to Its Undercard, Fury-Wilder Doesn’t

This week a few marquee matchups added some fights to their undercards. On the undercard of the December 15th Canelo Alvarez-Rocky Fielding match, David Lemieux will be fighting Tureano Johnson, Saddam Ali will be fighting Mauricio Herrera, and in his first appearance under the tutelage of Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso, Ryan “Kingry” Garcia will be fighting an opponent yet to be named. It is also expected that Tevin Farmer will be fighting Francisco Fonseca, but that match has yet to be finalized.

The Fury-Wilder fight added a few fights to its undercard as well this week, but their fights are nowhere near the quality of the Canelo-Fielding DAZN card. On that card, Chris Arreola will be fighting Maurenzo Smith, Mark Barriga will fight Carlos Licona, Anthony Yarde will fight an opponent not yet named, and Deontay Wilder’s brother Marsellus Wilder will make an appearance as well.

Gilberto Ramirez Set for December Rematch with Jesse Hart

Gillberto “Zurdo” Ramirez beat Jesse Hart in September of 2017, when after knocking him down in the second round, Hart rebounded to create an exciting fight, though he went on to lose a unanimous 115-112, 115-112, 114-113 decision. Hart will get the chance to avenge that loss on Dec. 14, when the pair will meet again as the headliners of an ESPN+ card live from Corpus Christi, Texas.

Tyson Fury Adds Freddie Roach to Corner before Wilder Matchup

After abandoning longtime trainer Peter Fury a few fights ago, Tyson Fury added a familiar face to his corner this week. The self-proclaimed “King of the Gypsies” has apparently been training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles and has said that Freddie Roach will be in his corner for the Fury fight. While Roach’s role isn’t one hundred percent clear, Fury said that the move was far from a psychological ploy, and that although Roach was initially listed as Fury’s cutman, “Whatever Freddie wants to do, he can do,” Fury said. “Freddie’s his own man. Whatever he wants to do, he’ll do in the corner. I’m sure he will. It’s always good to have experience in the corner. It’s always good to have a wise hand in the corner, and it’s gonna be to my advantage.”

Deontay Wilder was asked about Fury’s decision to bring in Roach and was far from concerned. “The Bronze Bomber” noted that Tyson Fury consistently said that he couldn’t be beat, so why would he have decided to bring in a new trainer. Wilder also pointed out that he has not added any new trainers, since he believes he can beat Fury doing exactly what he has been doing his whole career. He also made the claim that the reason Fury moved from Big Bear to LA to train was because he couldn’t not handle the elevation and needed an out. Whether that’s true or not we do know Fury has been committed enough to training to have been celibate for 3 months.
